What may appear to be an indelible trace of human civilization, will turn into a thin layer of rock formation, consisting of the materials from which our world was built. These materials are the ‘technosignature’ of our civilization, its unique imprint. For example, deposits from the current geological epoch called the Anthropocene are likely to contain anomalous levels of nitrogen from fertilizers and fertilizers and rare-earth elements used in electronics. Moreover, this technosignature will contain substances that do not occur in nature. Among them will be fluorocarbons and plastics.
